Local baseball and softball games were rained out Thursday night.

In local football news,
Licking Valley running back/linebacker Storm Klein got a surprise visit from two Army Staff Sergeants during lunch Thursday. Klein has been nominated to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, on January 3rd, at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Klein, who has said that he’ll play at Ohio State, is one of 400 to be nominated nationally. The list will be whittled down to 90, who will actually play.

In local news,
Captains of industry, professional athletes, famous coaches, celebrities and even little kids wearing Blue Jacket Jerseys quietly filed in Nationwide Arena Wednesday night to honor the man who brought the NHL team to Columbus. More than 4,000 people came out to remember John H. McConnell. There were countless tributes to the man who started the steel-processing company Worthington Industries in 1955. McConnell died April 25th after a battle with cancer. He was 84.

In the NBA,
Lebron James can’t hit a basket and the Cleveland Cavaliers can’t buy a basket. The Boston Celtics have a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals after holding the Cavaliers under 36 percent shooting in an 89 - 73 win over the Cavs. Lebron led the Cav scoring with 21 points, shooting 2 for 13 from 3 point range. Game 3 is set for Saturday in Cleveland.

In other NBA news,
People waited as long as 2 ½ hours Thursday for cheap pizza as Papa John’s made good on its apology to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Eighty-six stores in Cleveland, Columbus, Toledo and Youngstown sold large, one topping pizzas for 23 cents. Near Cleveland, people stood wrapped in blankets outside a store in Westlake and the line was two blocks long in University Heights. Police stood nearby to make sure people didn’t get unruly. Police said a regional manager asked for assistance closing its Columbus Stores.

In the MLB,
The New York Yankees avoided a three-game sweep by the Indians with a 6 - 3 victory. The Yanks recently silent bats came to life with Jason Giambi, Robinson Cano, Johnny Damon, and Wilson Betemit all hitting home runs. The tribe open a four game series tonight at home against the Toronto Blue Jays. Our pre-game show begins at 6:37pm.

The Clippers swept a double header with Rochester, game one, 5 - 1, and game two, 6 - 4.
